On February 20, 1962, John Glenn launched into orbit aboard the Mercury-Atlas 6 spacecraft, which was called Friendship 7. He successfully completed three Low Earth Orbits around our planet in just under five hours. This historic spaceflight milestone made him the first American to fly in orbital space, solidifying the success of NASA's initial crewed program.

Released in the early 1960s by Castle Films, this 8mm film is one of the earliest research resources made available to the public. These home-movie reels were sold internationally to schools, libraries, and collectors during the height of the space race. The distribution history of these items took an interesting turn in 1977, when Universal officially dropped the Castle brand name and rebranded the home-movie division to Universal 8. Following structural changes in the media marketplace, the ultimate closure came in 1984, when Universal 8 closed down for good due to the rise of home video cassettes.
