Gower Peninsula

Arthur's Stone

Don't mix this up with the other Arthur's Stone, located 61 miles (as the crow flies) northeast near Willersley and Dorstone, England (1). The Gower Peninsula's Arthur's Stone is just a mile east of Reynoldston and offers stunning panoramic views of the Loughor Estuary and the surrounding countryside. In Welsh, this ancient stone structure is called Maen Cetti (Stone of Cetti).

No major excavations

For a long time, the stones have been protected as a scheduled ancient monument. The Gower's Arthur's Stone hasn't undergone much formal archaeological investigation. What makes this site unique is that it hasn't been disturbed by archaeologists, preserving thousands of years of untouched history, which is pretty rare these days.

The Structure

The stone structure features a massive quartz conglomerate capstone resting on an Old Red Sandstone ridge, and it is split into two main parts. Originally weighing around 25 tons, one large piece is still propped up by the upright stones, creating the roof of the structure. The broken fragment, estimated to weigh about 10 tons, lies on the ground nearby. This split gives the monument its striking and slightly precarious look today.

When you visit the site, you'll instantly notice the hundreds of stones scattered around the main structure, almost like it was blown up!

The legend

The Stone in the Shoe

According to this popular legend, King Arthur was walking nearby when he felt a sharp, annoying pebble inside his boot. He pulled the stone out and carelessly threw it miles away over his shoulder. Because of Arthur's immense magical power, the pebble expanded in mid-air as it travelled, growing into the enormous 30-ton boulder that eventually crashed down to form the tomb's capstone. (2)
